Recently finished poster for a local dramatic society production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’.

Alas not the official poster, still, its a brilliantly written play, full to the brim with dark imagery, which i just couldn’t help putting pen to paper over..

Syriana – A life in film

The sleeve-notes on the back sum it up perfectly – ‘In a place where imagination and reality overlap, Syriana conjures up images of the busy Damascus streets, jewel-like houses and desert suns – with a touch of spy movie menace. With otherworldly qanun and Arabic percussion, 1950’s guitar and sonorous double bass, A life in film is a Paris, Texas-like meditation from the Syrian desert.’

This is a vinyl version of Syriana’s ‘Road To Damascus’ album which I designed a few months back, and contains remixes and re-imaginations which are well worth a listen and, if possible, try to catch the show live.

The cover was shot by Russian photographer Larissa Korlara whilst travelling through Syria, I think her photographs manage to capture the mystery and romance of the Syrian desert whilst still being just a little dangerous.

Death of a Cemetery

Manila North Cemetery in Manila, Philippines is a place of rest for 3000 people, all of whom are alive.  When rich families first erected mausoleums for their dead in the late 1800s, they needed caretakers to maintain them and guard any valuables buried within.  In exchange for their work, the caretakers were allowed to live inside the mausoleums, and a cemetery community was born.  Gravekeepers grow gardens around tombs; chefs cook up hearty fare in restaurants alongside crypts; and children play basketball in between school and funerals.  Some residents are part of a long legacy of caretaking families; others are new transplants and find they must share their bed with an additional body.

‘Death Of A Cemetery’ is an inspiring independent documentary made by Phil Britton and Jeanie Duque-Dizon, I was asked to work on the titles which in turn led to me doing a poster (above). Paint, pens and mac.

When I first spoke with John Darnielle of ‘The Mountain Goats’ about the aesthetic of his new record, he said he’d like to see a mix of ‘ancient divinity’ and ’1980s fear’ mixed with ‘a sort of contemporary wicca’, I thought ‘wow – this guys record had better be good!’. He didn’t disappoint. When he sent me the songs (demo’s at first) I could see immediately where he was coming from, the rich tapestry of well crafted lyrics take you along a journey you dare not switch over from.

On a slight tangent, when i was younger a friend of mine had a pirate copy of The Exorcist, I was genuinely scared to have this small label-less Betamax tape in my house, its two white spools staring at me in the darkness, ‘Poltergeist’ had a similar vibe’ – the ‘portal’ in the corner of our homes, where you can literally ‘switch to the other side’. There was something about that 80s supernatural austerity..

I should point out this album isn’t at all death metal (altho John is a big fan), and its always a risk that it might end up looking so bearing in mind the previous two paragraphs. No, this album had to look classy and minimal, invite you to pick up and examine further, saving the chaos til you open the box. It had to be black, except for some delicate spot silver typography of course, something rune-like but with a modern twist, Sam Chirnside had a prototype face that with a tweek here and there worked perfectly. So then, a modern mysticism. John agreed. we were up and running.

John sent me short descriptions of all of the songs (most are not as obvious as the titles suggest) and I then set about filming (on iphone) and sourcing archive footage to take grabs from. There’s something about a video grab, its murky and undefined. I remember reading a book called ‘Reasons for Knocking at an empty house’ by Bill Viola and looking at the sequences of distorted video images therein, they’re unsettling even if they’re not meant to be, I wanted that vibe, like the songs themselves the viewer can then draw there own conclusions, or, if they like, can just turn over.

It was coming together nicely, but i felt was looking a bit too dark, so the original sleeve became an O-card (wraps over the jewel case) and the cover in the case became the familiar pattern found on the back of tarot cards (done as a spot silver on maroon).

I don’t usually write so much on these posts (come back…!) but i thoroughly enjoyed working on this record. Maggie Fost and Merge (the record co) were very supportive, and John Darnielle genuinely made me feel like part of the recording process.

Over the past couple of months i have been fortunate enough to be working with ‘The Mountain Goats’, providing artwork for their forthcoming album ‘All Eternals Deck.’

I’ll post more info on the entire project and also show pics of cd/vinyl packaging when I get/photograph them in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime heres one of the point-of-sale posters which’ll be gracing stores shortly…

WOMAD will be returning to Cáceres in Extremadura, Spain for the twentieth year this May and i was asked to pitch for the poster design, a first draft of which is shown above.

Some background – the ‘emblem’ of Cáceres is a stork so i thought i’d get the woodblocks out and give it a go along the lines of the old style travel posters but alas it wasn’t to be, and now it sits atop the reject pile, shame because i quite liked this one….

New Blood on the road

For a couple of nights this March PG is taking his ‘New Blood’ show to the Hammersmith Apollo, these dates have been added to allow for the possibility of filming the concert in 3D for a forthcoming release. It all happened a bit quick therefore I had to pull something together for print in just a couple of hours to make the promoters schedule. I would love to have done a run of these showing the embryo in various stages of development, ah well maybe next time..
