Graphic design can often be frustrating. You might receive a brief, answer it to the best of your ability, only for the goalposts to be moved or your idea to become so compromised that its energy drains away before your very eyes.

Occasionally, though, an artist or client comes along who's happy for you to really flex your design muscles and see where your instincts take you.

That was the case with The Endless Dance – the first collaborative album from Northern Irish producer and composer Hannah Peel and Chinese percussionist Beibei Wang. Our early meetings revolved around connection, duality and cultural musical alchemy. We even had a photoshoot. After making some progress, Hannah and Beibei encouraged me to take the artwork in a more left-field direction.

Using collage (incorporating images from the shoot), paint and, finally, the Mac, a visual identity gradually came together that reflected the joy, freedom and interplay of them performing together. The artwork echoes the album's journey through the 24 solar terms of the Chinese calendar, carrying a cornucopia of sound along the way – synths and piano alongside traditional and unconventional percussion.
